Change of Short Code 80041 Tariff

2013-03-06

Calling from mobiles

Dear Top Up customers,

Currently the £3 short code 80041 is billed in two stages; you send a single request and two billed messages are sent in response at £1.50 each.

This approach made sense when Topup service was launched; however it is now appropriate to have a single message response at £3. Therefore we will be updating the tariff for short code 80041 at the start of April 2013.

The Networks do not update at the same time and as a result the tariff change will be on two days; Tuesday 2nd April 2013 and Thursday 4th April 2013.

Tuesday 2nd April 2013 – Everything Everywhere (T-Mobile & Orange), O2 and Three

Thursday 4th April 2013 – Vodafone

After these dates you will recieve just ONE message after top up, and it costs 3 pounds.

Regards,

Talk4longer team

Vodafone offers cheap mobile calls for World Cup travelers

2010-05-28

Calling from mobiles

Twitpic your World Cup journey and avoid a huge bill waiting for you when you get home

Vodafone is helping customers heading to South Africa for the World Cup to call home from mobile phones at normal UK rates.

The Vodafone Passport promotion which runs during June and July, offers customers after paying a 75p connection charge, to talk to friends back in the UK without incurring the usual expensive charges ringing from abroad.

If you are on a contract which includes minutes, or alternatively a pay as you go customer with Vodafone Freedom Pack minutes, the cost of your calls will be deducted from these. Texting home will also cost just 11p.

If you are more interested in documenting your time in South Africa via Twitter or Facebook, Vodafone customers will have to pay £3 per MB for the first 5MBS as the mobile network claims to offer the most valuable international data roaming rates. If a flight to South Africa is not on the agenda (or in the budget), surfing the net in Europe will cost you £1 per MB for the first 5MBs.

Ensuring you don't go over your phone call budget, Vodafone is also offering a free real-time text alert which will notify users when they are nearing the end of their data allowance.

The international roaming rates start from June 15th, two days after England's opening game. Vodafone customers can get saving by calling 555.

Cheap VOIP Calls from mobile

2010-05-03

Calling from mobiles

Earlier today Vonage announced the availability of Vonage Mobile for the Android smartphoneplatform. Currently the app works only on AT&T and T-Mobile USA Android smartphones, but the company has said that support for CDMA devices, such as those offered by Verizon and Sprint, is in the works.

The stated purpose for the application is to offer consumers access to low cost Vonage international calling rates. To partake in those, Vonage offers both an unlimited plan for $24.99/mo (to 60 countries) and a pay per use plan that requires a credit card on file, but has no up front costs. Rates for the pay per use plan vary greatly. For example, calls to Germany are charged at a per minute rate of US$.02 to land lines and $.25 to mobile phones. Antarctica, on the other hand, costs $1.88 per minute to land lines and $2.18 to mobile phones - for those of you with family in the very, very deep south. A casual comparison of rates suggests that Google Voice's international service might be a bit cheaper for many users, but there is something that Vonage Mobile offers that Google Voice does not.

That something is true VoIP calling over Wi-Fi that can be used for placing free calls to anywhere in the U.S. as well as for calling those international destinations with one of the company's plans.

Like Google Voice, Vonage Mobile integrates tightly into an Android smartphone and can be configured to take over for outbound calling tasks automatically. You dial a number or place a call from a contact normally, but Vonage Mobile jumps in and places the call when it meets the requirements that you define in its settings. Users have options to use Vonage Mobile only for paid international calls, for both free domestic Wi-Fi and paid international calls, or to have the app ask each time. The free U.S. calling offers users a great way to save the minutes in their T-Mobile USA or AT&T calling plans.

I configured Vonage Mobile to identify itself by using my Google Voice phone number, which it verified first by calling and asking me for the PIN code I had defined when I created the account within the app. Calls placed over Vonage take longer to connect than normal calls, but that seems a small price to pay for what will work out to be free or discounted calling from home and office for many users.

The application is not without its faults, though. It appears to have no support for landscape orientation, for one. This made setting up the app with my Motorola CLIQ's keyboard exposed a bit more difficult. But apart from that, and the app's heavy reliance on the web browser for secondary information, the important stuff - like call quality - seemed to be solid.

Vonage Mobile for Android can be found in the Android Market as of today. Vonage Mobile is already available for Apple and BlackBerry smartphones.

Cheap international calls could be boost by mobile broadband

2010-04-26

Calling from mobiles

Use of mobileIP telephony solutions in the UK could be boosted after it was reported that it is one of the cheapest countries in the world for mobile broadband.

The UK, France and India have among the world's lowest prices for mobile broadband plans, according to figures published by ABI Research, a technology market research company. The low-cost of mobile broadband access in the UK could make it cheaper to make telephone calls using VoIP solutions via netbooks, tablet computers, smartphones and other mobile internet devices.

However, according to Bhavya Khanna, analyst at ABI Research, widespread use of data dongles in developed markets has "created strains on mobile networks". This could see "data plans change to throttle data consumption", with operators in some countries already limiting data to 5GB or 3GB per month, even for their most expensive plans. Jake Saunders, vice president of forecasting at ABI Research, added that overage charges for data plans are confusing consumers and that operators should simplify overage costs and educate customers to "encourage uptake of such services". Applications such as VoIP phones are increasingly powering the growth of the mobile broadband market, Allot Communications said earlier in the year.

Cheap calls from mobiles - Skype in USA

2010-03-19

Calling from mobiles

by Paul Boutin, VentureBeat

Update: A Skype representative told VentureBeat that Skype had chosen to keep its app out of the U.S. Ovi store because of a pre-existing deal with Verizon. You can download Skype for Nokia Symbian phones by opening from your phone browser.

“Nokia adds Skype to Ovi store,” says an Engadget post being circulated this morning. Americans are in for a disappointment: Ovi doesn’t offer Skype to customers on AT&T and other U.S. networks. It doesn’t show up in the store for Americans. The Ovi website returns the error,”Sorry, this item is not available for your country.”

There’s a workaround we’ve tested at VentureBeat: Go to Ovi and install the free Fring client. After you register a username and password with Fring, it will prompt you to configure several add-ons, one of which is Skype.

Give Fring your Skype username and password. It will connect to Skype and show your contacts. When you press the telephone-handset icon to make a call, Fring will prompt you with four options: Fring call, Video call, Cellular call, and SkypeOut call.

SkypeOut will let you dial any phone in the world. You need to include a plus sign and the country code, such as +4152719629 for U.S. numbers. Skype’s super-cheap rates apply — 2.5 cents per minute or about $1.50 an hour for the continental USA. If you don’t have unlimited minutes on your plan, Skype via Fring is a cheap way to make voice calls once you’ve used up your plan’s monthly allotment.

The one big shortcoming of Internet calls is the two-way delay of up to several seconds between the time one party speaks, and the time the other party hears it. This delay prevents fast, real-time conversations where both people talk at the same time. You end up trading sentences back and forth, the way cops and cab drivers do with their dispatchers. A radio talk show producer told me it drives them crazy because of the dead air space between the host’s question to a caller, and the caller’s reply. You get what you pay for.

Guide published for cheaper mobile deals

2010-03-12

Calling from mobiles

Bad news for mobile network providers, good news for users - Ofcom recently published a mobile phone guide to help customers switching calling plans, which could help them to make a lot of savings.

Ofcom claimed that, by tailoring a mobile deal more suitable to his/her needs, a typical customer might save £12.45 a month or around £150 a year. This is possible because many users signed contacts with excess inclusive minutes and other features which hardly used - and paid extra money for them.

BillMonitor, a website accredited by Ofcom for price comparison, offers online bill tracking where consumers supply their online billing account details and the website will analyses these bills for a tailored recommendation.

A consumer can also enter minutes and texts overseas calls, picture messaging and data usage for a one-off tariff search, to find the best calling plan and make the most savings.

These functions, quite similar to Talk4longer's price comparison for cheaper international calls, are designed to help customers to expense less on buying mobiles and making calls from mobiles.

Cheap calls from mobiles - any differences?

2010-03-10

Calling from mobiles

Q: Is there any difference between your two services for making cheap international calls from mobiles?

A: Talk4longer currently offer two services for mobile users making international calls:

1. Short Code;

2. Top Up.

The short code service works best for Orange, T-mobile and 3 mobile users. It is quite easy to use - all you need to do is:

1. Find the short code here by searching the name of your country;

2. Then dial the code from your mobile and input your destination number - that is all.

There is no top up or account opening needed, and no requirements for inclusive minutes - so it works for Pay and Go mobile too!

For users of other mobile networks such as O2 or Vodafone, Top Up service is the best option. It is cheap, but needs inclusive minutes to work. And you will need to top up first.
